Holiness is defined as consecrated to God. In Hebrew word Qodesh (kaw-doshe) meaning to be “set apart.” It means we are set apart from the world. Once you have become a born again Christian, John 8:36 says, “If the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.”
Salvation is just the beginning of Christianity. Right after you have been born again and baptized in the water. The Spirit of God will slowly be going to change you from glory to glory or the sanctification will soon take place. It is stripping away any bad habits and bad attitude that doesn’t fit you of who you are as a child of God. If we follow the dictates of our flesh, we are a slave to sin. According to John 8:34, “Whoever commits a sin is a slave to sin.”
"Whoever commits sin is a slave to sin." -John 8:34

Although we can’t avoid making mistakes until we are still currently living on this earthly flesh, but we strive to live a life dying to our fleshly desires, “For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.” Jesus became sin for us who knew no sin.
You may want to ask the question, how are we supposed to live as a Holy child of God?
I had a wrong perception of what holiness is all about. I thought it is something to do with wearing a long dress and a turban that another religion considers as holy. But as a dig deeper into what the bible says, holiness is something to do with how we live our lives. God doesn’t look at our outside appearance but He looks at our heart. We could look holy on the outside but full of filth on the inside.
Romans 12:1 mentions that we must present our bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God. We must not conform to this world but be transformed by the renewing of our minds. Renewing of our mind is to be spiritually minded that leads to life and peace. To fix our thoughts on the above as James 3:17 reiterates.
James 3:17, “But the wisdom from above is first of all pure, peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits without partiality or without hypocrisy.”
We are warned time and time again that we must not be led by our flesh but being led by the Spirit for our flesh cannot please God and to those work according to the dictates of their flesh is an enemy against God. God is the spirit therefore we must be led by the spirit of God. The fruit of the spirit is in Galatians 5:22.
Just a few days ago, I’ve listened to an audiobook by Dwight Moody. This is what I’ve gathered.
- Justification – a change of state, right standing with God
- Repentance – a change of mind, a new mind about God
- Regeneration – a change of nature, a new heart of God.
- Conversion – a change of life, a new life for God
- Adoption – A change of family, a new relationship towards God
- Sanctification – separation unto God
- Glorification – a new state
Jesus said that who loves his life, will lose it and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. (John 12:25)
Titus 2:11-14 New International Version (NIV)
11 For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. 12 It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, 13 while we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, 14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.
