God tests our hearts and minds. According to Jeremiah 17:9-10, “The heart is deceitful above all things beyond cure and desperately wicked who can know it? “I the Lord search the heart and I test the mind.”
The heart is referred to the inner man.
Let’s study about the heart and the mouth
- A tree is known by its fruit. Matthew 12:35-36, “An evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things. A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things.” Proverbs 15:4, “A wholesome tongue is a tree of life but perverseness in it breaks the spirit.”
- We are judge by the words we speak. Matthew 12:37, “For by your words you will be justified, and by your words, you will be condemned.” If we say we don’t have sins we are liars. 1 John 1:9 says, If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
- Guard your heart. Proverbs 4:23-24, “Keep your heart with all diligence for out of it springs the issue of life.” Our hearts can not be trusted. The heart is deceitful above all else. Let your mind govern your emotion and not the other way around.
- The mouth brings life or death, blessing, or cursing. “Put away from you a deceitful mouth and perverse lips far from you.” Proverbs 4:24 “Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing, my brethren these things ought not to be so.” – James 3:10 I used to curse before until God showed me to watch my words. I used to listen to rap and hip-hop music that contains profanity language that God had asked me to stop listening to that kind of music. We have to bless those who persecute us. I used to retaliate those who have hurt me until God rebuke me and said, “deny yourself, pick your cross.” God doesn’t want us to retaliate because God is our vindicator. The world would tell you to get even, but God said, I will avenge you and don’t take matters into your own hands.
I have realized that if I am not prayerful and reading the Bible, my flesh is weak and my emotion gets the best of me and I can look like the rest of the world cursing and showing my bad side. But God had convicted me that as a child or a follower of Christ we must be the light of the world and be set apart from the world. We can radiate the light within us into the world for we are called the city set on a hill. This is how we can attract others or unbelievers through our words and actions by showing the love of God.
Most of the problem that is happening around the world, the killings and the violence is because of the human heart. Our issue isn’t about the color of our skin or our political differences or beliefs, it is our heart. If everyone of us take the time to examine his or her heart and be willing to take an accountability to start a change from within instead of blaming others and pointing the finger we could be living in a better world. But the problem is people have a hard time taking accountability and admitting to their wickedness because it is rather easy to point the finger and find someone to blame about our own issues and problems.
